Veteran CID Creator B.P. Singh Dies, Indian TV Industry Pays Tribute

-

India’s entertainment industry is mourning the death of veteran producer and director B.P. Singh, the creative force behind the country’s longest-running television crime series, ‘CID’, and a pioneer of detective dramas on Indian television.

Singh, who became widely recognised for his contribution to the iconic crime series, passed away at the age of 77 after suffering a severe cardiac arrest in the early hours of Tuesday.

Following confirmation of his death, friends, colleagues and admirers shared tributes, with the news sending shockwaves across the Indian television industry.

Singh began his professional journey in modest circumstances, working as a news camera operator for Doordarshan before moving into independent television production. He later established himself as a prominent creator by introducing innovative concepts and distinctive genres that had rarely been explored on Indian television.

In addition to ‘CID’, Singh created and produced several other memorable television programmes, including the popular horror anthology series ‘Aahat’ and the hard-hitting police drama ‘Khaaki’.

Through his technical expertise, commitment to high production standards and exceptional storytelling abilities, Singh transformed Indian television entertainment. His work leaves behind a lasting legacy that helped shape the evolution of crime and drama programming on the small screen.

News of his unexpected passing prompted an outpouring of grief on social media. Actor and CINTAA representative Amit Behl, who reportedly shared a close association with Singh for nearly three decades, paid tribute to the late producer, remembering him as both a mentor and a guiding figure.

“He was perceived as a stern and fierce man by the outside world but he was someone so sensitive and compassionate, so incredibly intelligent and a true father figure to all those who worked under him,”

Behl said.

Writer Ashoke Pandit also expressed his condolences through an emotional message online. He noted that Singh’s remarkable contributions to iconic crime thrillers would continue to inspire future generations of writers and storytellers.

Singh’s influence remains firmly embedded in Indian popular culture, particularly through ‘CID’, which captivated millions of viewers with its engaging crime investigations, unforgettable characters such as ACP Pradyuman and its widely recognised catchphrases.

The series has also attracted a new generation of viewers through its availability on Netflix, years after its original television broadcast. Singh’s pioneering contributions helped establish the foundations of modern Indian television, securing his place as one of the industry’s influential creative figures.
