Russian Analyst Urges Protection of the Indus Waters Treaty

-

Dr Roksolana Zigon, a geopolitical analyst said something on Tuesday that I think is really important. Weakening the Indus Waters Treaty for reasons would be a very bad idea. The Indus Waters Treaty is essential for peace in the region so it should continue.

Dr Roksolana Zigon was speaking at a seminar about the Indus Waters Treaty in Islamabad. She talked about how India’s handling water issues and she is very worried. Dr Roksolana Zigon thinks that India is making decisions on its own, which is hurting the trust between countries. The Indus Waters Treaty is a deal and Dr Roksolana Zigon warned that building dams in areas where the rivers start could make the region even more unstable. The Indus Waters Treaty is important, for peace and Dr Roksolana Zigon wants to make sure it keeps going.

‘India’s Water Threat Violates International Law’

Dr Zigon said that Indias statement about taking Pakistans water is not right according to international law. Indias statement is a problem because Pakistans farms need water from the rivers to grow crops. In fact than 90 per cent of the farms in Pakistan need river water. The Indus Waters Treaty is what makes sure the water is shared fairly.

Dr Zigon also said that if the rivers do not flow naturally it will hurt Pakistans farms. She thinks India is trying to use water to get what it wants from Pakistan. India is building dams in areas where the rivers start. This could make the situation in the region even worse. Dr Zigon said that the Indus Waters Treaty is very important for keeping the peace, in South Asia. It is necessary for people to follow this treaty so that everyone can live in peace.

Indus Waters Treaty Remains the Key Water-Sharing Agreement

Dr Zigon said that the Indus Waters Treaty is really well known around the world for being a good agreement on sharing water. The Indus Waters Treaty says that India can use the water from the rivers. On the hand the Indus Waters Treaty gives Pakistan the right to use the water from the western rivers. Dr Zigon also said that the Permanent Indus Commission is an useful group, for solving problems related to the Indus Waters Treaty.
