England captain Jos Buttler will miss the three-match Twenty20 series against Australia due to a calf injury and may also miss the following five one-day internationals. Phil Salt will captain England in the T20s, with Harry Brook as the potential captain for the ODIs. The T20 series starts on Wednesday in Southampton, followed by the ODIs on 19th September. This will be England’s first white-ball assignment since the T20 World Cup. Marcus Trescothick is the interim white-ball coach for the Australia series and the West Indies tour in November. Test coach Brendon McCullum will take over the limited-overs sides’ responsibilities from January. Buttler sustained the injury during training before The Hundred tournament and also missed The Hundred and Lancashire’s T20 Blast quarter-final defeat due to the injury. Salt, who has experience in T20s and ODIs, will lead the team in Buttler’s absence and might also take up wicketkeeping duties. Brook, who has been serving as vice-captain in Tests, is expected to join the ODI squad after England’s final Test against Sri Lanka. Jordan Cox has also been included in the ODI squad as cover.
