Chinese state media quoted Xi as saying: “The situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region continues to evolve. The war there has caused losses to people across the region and does not serve the common interests of the international community.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping added that China will work with other BRICS members to promote peace and stability in the region.
BRICS faces deepening internal divisions
I heard the comments as leaders of the expanded BRICS group gathered in New Delhi for their summit.
BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
The bloc has tried to grow its influence as a stage for emerging economies. Its members keep different views on big geopolitical matters.
The ongoing war in Iran, the fight in Ukraine, and the friction between the United States and China are testing BRICS ability to keep a stance.
Reuters said the summit was set to deliver a joint statement that would denounce unilateral military action but would not name a particular country.
Xi Describes BRICS as a Leading Voice of the Global South
Xi described BRICS as a leading group in the Global South and a model of self-reliance for emerging and developing economies.
He called for greater innovation-driven development and said China would assume the BRICS chairmanship next year and host the 19th BRICS summit.
The Chinese president’s visit to India also comes amid a gradual improvement in relations between Beijing and New Delhi following years of tensions, including a deadly border clash in 2020.
