Pakistan began its FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign with a 4-0 loss to Thailand at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Indonesia on Saturday. Teerasak Poeiphimai scored twice. An own goal made the Green Shirts’ start to the tournament even harder.
Pakistan, ranked 198th worldwide. Playing as a guest team, they showed strong numbers in a tight first half hour.
Mohibullah made an interception, and Ali Raza performed a superb sliding tackle. Nolberto Solano’s side limited Thailand to shots, and goalkeeper Yousuf Butt made a fine save at the half-hour mark.
Moments later, Yousuf could not stop a header from Jude Soonsup-Bell. Teerasak then tucked in the rebound, giving Pakistan a goal in the 31st minute.
Thailand’s second goal came ten minutes after. Captain Abdullah Iqbal’s misdirected pass sparked an attack, and Soonsup-Bell slammed the ball into the net from close range.
Thailand pushed the ball into the net again three minutes later. The attempt was called offside.
Pakistan needed energy. Coach Nolberto Solano made three changes at halftime, bringing in Shayek Dost, Hayyan Khattak and Alamgir Ghazi to replace Ali Raza, Ali Agha and Abdullah Shah.
The fresh players added drive. Full-backs Mohammad Fazal and Haris Zeb ran forward. Pakistan began the second half brightly. Pakistan kept the ball and threatened the Thai defence, but did not finish a chance.
Thailand slowly regained the lead in the half and scored their third goal at the hour mark. Teerasak passed a one‑two with Supachai Chaided before a left‑footed volley hit Haris Zeb and looped over goalkeeper Yousuf into the net.
Abdul Samad Arshad tried a curling shot from outside the box. Missed the target as Pakistan tried to respond and veteran Kaleemullah Khan was brought on with 19 minutes left.
At the minute, Thailand missed a golden chance to extend their lead when a grounded cross arrived from the left, but the forward completely missed the ball with only Yousuf to beat.
Teerasak finished his brace six minutes from time. Pakistan could not clear their lines; Peeradol Chamrasamee played the ball forward. A smart touch from Kakana Khamyok guided the forward onside.
Teerasak gently sent the ball past the goalkeeper to seal the victory.
Solano’s side will face the Philippines on September 29 before their group‑stage match against Vietnam on October 2.
Pakistan entered the tournament after winning the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament in the Maldives this year, a first title in 74 years.
