Filmmaker Karan Johar has revealed that celebrities have become increasingly careful about their comments on ‘Koffee With Karan’, with previous controversies linked to the show making guests reluctant to say anything that could lead to public relations trouble.
Speaking to Variety India, Johar observed a noticeable change in how guests behave during the show, explaining that celebrities are now more reserved when discussing their private lives.
The popular chat show’s host said conversations were no longer as open as before because guests feared that even an insignificant comment could trigger a controversy and create unwanted publicity problems.
“I know the steam has become lesser, the brew is much milder. That’s only because everyone’s worried. Because you saw what happens. Anyone comes on this show and says even something tiny and it blows up and it’s a PR nightmare and no one wants that,” he said.
Publicists and PR Managers Keep a Close Watch on Celebrity Appearances
Johar recalled that during the early days of the show, the studio audience area was largely empty, with only a small number of production staff present.
He explained that the situation has changed considerably over the years, as guests are now accompanied by publicists, managers and image consultants who closely supervise their appearances.
“When I started Koffee with Karan, and I used to look beyond the stage, there used to be nobody there; it was just an empty set. Now when I look, publicist, managers, image-management people, teams. The hair and makeup and entourage have also increased substantially,” he said.
The filmmaker’s comments reflect how the show’s previously candid discussions have become more restrained, with celebrities now more conscious of the possible repercussions of their statements on camera.
The most recent episode of Koffee With Karan featured Bollywood actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan.
