The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a weather advisory on Wednesday. It said that more rain will come to the parts of the country over the weekend, especially in the Potohar region and Islamabad.
The Met office noted that monsoon currents are moving into the parts of the country as stated in the advisory issued at 3 pm on Wednesday. It also said that a westerly wave is affecting these areas and will probably strengthen on September 4-5, which are Friday and Saturday.
Because of this weather system the PMD said that rain‑wind and thundershowers with some falls will happen in Kashmir’s Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur from Thursday to Sunday with occasional gaps.
In Gilgit‑Baltistan, the same rain‑wind and thundershowers are expected in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar during the time period.
Rain‑wind and thundershowers with scattered falls and sometimes very heavy are forecast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Peshawar, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Waziristan from the evening of September 3 to September 5 with occasional gaps.
In Islamabad and upper Punjab the same thundershowers and some heavy or very heavy drops are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Hafizabad and Kasur from September 3 to September 5. The PMD also said the same will happen in Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan and nearby areas on September 4 to September 5 with gaps.
The Met Office added that hot and humid weather will stay in most parts of Sindh and Balochistan during the forecast period. It also said that rain‑wind and thunderstorms are expected in Zhob, Bar Khan, Musakhel and nearby areas.
The PMD advisory warned that heavy rains could cause flooding in low‑lying parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi and also in Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Lahore on Friday and Saturday.
It also warned of flash flooding in streams and nullahs in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, GB, Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat and the twin cities during the forecast period.
“Landslides may happen in areas of KP, GB, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period ” it added. It advised tourists and travellers to remain cautious.
The PMD also advised farmers to manage their crop activities because of the weather conditions. It asked all authorities to stay alert and take necessary measures to avoid untoward situations.
Heavy rain has already been pounding Rawalpindi and Islamabad this week. It flooded low‑lying areas on Tuesday morning. Raised the water level in Leh Nullah.
On Monday, two hours of heavy showers made rainwater collect in streets and low‑lying areas of Rawalpindi. The roads turned into ponds. Many cars and motorcycles were stranded in rainwater.
