Fact Check: Viral Clip of JUI-F Chief Apologising in National Assembly Is Manipulated

-

Several social media users, including accounts that have previously posted in support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), circulated a video on X on October 28 claiming to show Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman seeking forgiveness in the National Assembly amid his ongoing tensions with the government.

However, the video has been manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI).

On October 28, Fazl accused the federal government of misusing the Constitution by imposing governor’s rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Addressing the National Assembly, he said these measures represented an imposed transfer of power rather than a change brought about through public opinion. He also criticised Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for failing to uphold Parliament’s dignity and called for a new Charter of Democracy to prevent unconstitutional measures and political violence.

Fazl also discussed his attempts to reduce tensions between the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alleging that the government had withdrawn from efforts to reach a consensus. Rejecting questions about his patriotism, he referred to his party’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and condemned the mockery of those who had lost their lives.

In recent weeks, the JUI-F chief has faced repeated criticism from government officials over his remarks about the state and his support for the PTI.

On October 28, an X account that appeared to support the PML-N based on its previous posts shared the video, claiming that Fazl was asking for forgiveness in the National Assembly. The post carried the caption: “See how Fazlu kept grovelling in the assembly today for forgiveness, but no one will share this part of the speech.”

The post received 20,277 views.

In the video, Fazl can allegedly be heard saying: “What is my fault? Why are they after me? I have asked for forgiveness, but they are not accepting it. Is my sin greater than PTI? What did I do wrong? Why am I being treated unjustly? These are the questions you should ask the media. But you are not doing it.”

Another account, which also appeared to support the PML-N based on its profile and previous posts, shared the same clip with the caption: “All the antics, today in the assembly, the ripples of apology. Fazlu’s politics is also masterful — where he needs to show off, his speeches go viral, and where he has to apologise, the camera, workers, and share button all vanish. Just spread this clip too; the public has the right to see the full film.”

That post garnered 12,785 views.

Jalal Sherazi, who describes himself in his X bio as a coordinator at the Prime Minister’s Office, also circulated the video. His caption read, “Look, even today, Fazlur Rehman kept talking about demanding an apology in the assembly, but this part of his speech is being avoided from being shared on social media.”

The post received 1,775 views.

Shahzad Younas Sheikh, who identifies himself in his X bio as a former spokesperson for Punjab, shared the clip as well, writing: “See how Fazlu kept mumbling apologies in the assembly even today, but no one shares this bit of his speech.”

His post attracted 661 views.

Several other accounts that had previously posted in support of the PML-N shared the same video in a similar context on X. Examples of these posts can be viewed here, here, and here.

A fact-checking investigation was launched to verify the claim, given public interest in the strained relationship between the JUI-F chief and the government, particularly in light of his support for the PTI and criticism of the federal government’s actions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A search using relevant keywords found no reports from credible mainstream media organisations confirming that Fazl had made the alleged remarks.

A closer examination of the footage revealed inconsistencies between the audio and Fazl’s lip movements, indicating that the clip may have been dubbed.

The viral footage was subsequently examined using AI-detection tools. Diopter, a tool designed to detect AI-generated audio, identified the audio as 100 per cent AI-generated.

Deepfake Total, another audio-detection tool, also indicated a 75.6% probability that the audio had been manipulated using AI.

Hive also estimated a 92% probability that the speech had been generated using AI.

Likewise, the SORA AI Video Detector identified a 66.67% likelihood that the video was AI-generated.

Meanwhile, Meta AI’s detection tool found a digital watermark in the footage, indicating that the clip may have been created using OpenAI technology.

A reverse image search to identify the source of the footage led to a video uploaded to the National Assembly of Pakistan’s official YouTube channel on October 28, 2026. The video was titled: ‘JUI F chief/MNA Maulana Fazal Ur Rehman expresses his views during National Assembly Session.’

The viral footage appears between the 3:25 and 3:51 marks of the original video.

In the original recording, Fazal stated, “Gauhar Sahib was also there; Asad Qaisar Sahib was also there. And he said to me that if they are calling you and you wish to meet them, and if there is any further discussion on this topic, then we are 100pc ready to accept your mandate.

“Although I have not met the prime minister for the past four to five months. And for the purpose that I can save the citizens of Pakistan from their blood, save the country from extremism, pave the way for the government and pave the way for the opposition, and that the country does not go towards bloodshed.”

Throughout the entire speech, Fazal neither apologised nor made any statements resembling those attributed to him in the viral clip.

This finding was further supported by a keyword search that brought up an Express Tribune report published on October 29, 2026, titled ‘Fazl calls for new Charter of Democracy.’

According to the report, the JUI-F chief called on political parties to settle their differences through dialogue instead of turning to unconstitutional actions or violence.

Additional searches also uncovered the original footage posted by Jamiat Digital Media on X on October 28, 2026. This version of the video likewise contained no apology or similar remarks.

The claim that a viral video depicts JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman apologising in the National Assembly is false.

The footage has been manipulated, with AI-generated audio dubbed over the original video.
